Right Shoulder Check

According to ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia), a right shoulder check is a crucial driving skill that helps ensure safety when changing lanes on the road. Here's how it's defined and when it's required:

✅ What is a Right Shoulder Check?

A right shoulder check is a quick glance over your right shoulder through the rear side window to check your blind spot — the area you can’t see in your mirrors.

🕒 When to Do a Right Shoulder Check (ICBC Guidelines):

You must do a right shoulder check when:

  1. 🔄 Changing lanes to the right

  2. 🚘 Merging onto a road

  3. 🅿️ Pulling over to the right (curb)

  4. ⛽ Exiting or entering a parking space on the right

  5. ➡️ Turning right — especially where pedestrians or cyclists may be present

  6. 🛵 Before opening your door after stopping, to check for bikes or traffic

⚠️ ICBC Road Test Tip:

Missing a required shoulder check during a road test can result in a deduction or failure, especially if it puts someone at risk (e.g., missing a cyclist or another vehicle in the blind spot).

✅ How to Do It Correctly:

  • Look quickly but clearly over your right shoulder (not just in mirrors)

  • Time it just before making your move (turn/lane change)

  • Combine with signal, mirror check, and proper lane position
