Lesson 1: Foundations of Safe Driving – Your First Time Behind the Wheel
Welcome to your very first driving lesson with Aikfny Driving School. This lesson builds the foundation for your entire driving journey. We focus on vehicle safety, proper seating mechanics, and basic vehicle control.
Below is the complete blueprint of what we cover during this initial session.
1. Verify Student Details
Before touching the vehicle controls, your instructor must verify your legal eligibility to drive. You must present your valid learner’s license to the instructor. We will document your license number, expiry date, and emergency contact details for our official training records.
2. Digital Policy Handover
Safety and transparency are our top priorities. At the start of this session, you will receive an electronic copy of our official school policy via email or text. This document outlines our safety protocols, cancellation policies, weather procedures, and road test booking guidelines.
3. Pre-Trip Inspection
A safe drive always begins before the engine starts. You will learn to perform a circle check of the vehicle to ensure it is roadworthy.
• Surroundings: Check for hazards, children, or pets near the vehicle.
• Tires: Visually inspect for low pressure or visible damage.
• Windows & Mirrors: Ensure all glass is clean and unobstructed.
• Fluid Leaks: Look under the car for any dripping fluids.
4. Master the SSS Routine
Once inside the vehicle, you must execute the SSS routine to guarantee proper posture, visibility, and safety.
• Seat: Adjust the distance so your wrist rests comfortably on top of the steering wheel while keeping a slight bend in your knees when pressing the pedals.
• Steering: Ensure your chest is at least 25 cm (10 inches) away from the airbag housing.
• Seatbelt: Secure your seatbelt low across your hips and flat across your chest.
5. Smooth Start and Stop
You will practice the mechanics of moving the vehicle and bringing it to a controlled, smooth halt.
• Starting: Secure the foot brake, shift into Drive (D), release the parking brake, and complete a 360-degree vision check before easing off the brake.
• Stopping: Look ahead to choose your stopping point, apply progressive and smooth pressure to the brake pedal, and bring the vehicle to a gentle stop without jerking.
6. Steering Control Techniques
Controlling your direction requires precision and smooth hand movements. We will practice the two primary steering methods:
• Hand-over-Hand: Best for sharp, low-speed turns like intersections or parking.
• Push-Pull (Feeding): Ideal for smooth, high-speed lane changes and gentle curves, ensuring your hands never cross over the airbag module.

Lesson 2: Intersection Mechanics & Hazard Perception
Navigating intersections safely is one of the most critical skills required to pass your ICBC Class 7 road test. Intersections are statistically the most common locations for traffic collisions in British Columbia. Lesson Two shifts your focus from basic vehicle mechanics to actively reading the road and interacting with other road users.
1. The ICBC Scanning Routine
To see hazards before they become emergencies, train your eyes to scan continuously using the ICBC See‑Think‑Do strategy.
• The 20‑Second Rule: Look 20 seconds ahead (about two blocks in the city) to anticipate changes.
• Mirror Checks: Check your rearview mirror every 5–8 seconds and always before braking.
• Intersection Scan: Look Left, Centre, Right, and Left again before entering any intersection.
2. Hazard Perception (The "Speak‑Out" Method)
During your ICBC road test, the examiner may ask you to identify hazards out loud. Practice calling out potential dangers in real time and categorize them:
• Fixed Hazards: Blind spots, intersections, construction zones, and hidden driveways.
• Moving Hazards: Pedestrians, cyclists, standard traffic, and erratic drivers.

• Controlled Intersections: Navigate standard stop signs, yield signs, and traffic lights correctly.
• Uncontrolled Intersections: Yield to the vehicle on your right if you arrive at the same time.
• Four‑Way Stops: First to stop is the first to go. If arriving simultaneously, yield to the right.
